What Actually Makes a Good Workwear Polo?
Picture a hotel group kitting out reception, housekeeping and management across several sites. A school where every staff member – from the office to the site team – wears the same workwear polo. A trades business where one shirt has to work in the van, on site, and in front of a client.
In every case, the polo isn’t just a garment. It’s on show every day, washed hard every week, and it still has to carry a logo cleanly a year from now. That’s a lot to ask of a shirt — and it’s exactly why we spend more time than most talking clients through what’s actually inside the ones we recommend.
Here’s how we think about it.
The Everyday Workhorse
For the bulk of most uniform orders, the job is simple: survive a proper wash, keep its colour, and still look like a uniform after 100+ washes rather than 10.
Our go-to here is the Kustom Kit KK403 Klassic Polo – a 65% polyester/35% cotton blend at 185gsm with genuine Superwash® 60°C performance, meaning it can take a full hot wash without losing shape or colour. It comes in a huge colour range and sizes from XS to 6XL, which makes it easy to kit out an entire team consistently. The KK703 gives you the same fabric and wash performance in a women’s fit.
If you only ever bought one polo for a uniform programme, this is the one that earns its place.
For teams on their feet all day
Retail staff, hospitality teams, and anyone working a physical shift need a polo that manages heat, not one that leaves them uncomfortable by lunchtime.
The Henbury HB475 is built for exactly this: 100% polyester micro-piqué at 180gsm with CoolPlus® wicking yarn, which actively pulls moisture away from the skin rather than just letting it sit. It also holds its colour well over repeat washes. The HB476 offers the same technology in a women’s cut.
For something newer, the Nimbus tri-blend deluxe polo (N140M/N140F) combines organic cotton, recycled polyester and a touch of spandex with HeiQ Smart Temp™ – a thermoregulating finish that keeps the fabric noticeably cooler – plus a built-in odour-control treatment. Worth considering for any client who’s mentioned staff discomfort in warmer months.
Built to survive shift after shift
Bulk workwear orders live or die on shape retention – a polo that bags out at the collar or twists after a few washes makes an entire team look inconsistent, even if every shirt started out identical.
The Pro RTX RX101 is our standard recommendation for exactly this problem: 50/50 polycotton at 220gsm with twin-needle stitching for extra structure, and one of the widest size ranges available, running up to 8XL. The RX01F matches it in a women’s fit, and the RX102 adds a long-sleeve option for colder months or outdoor roles – useful for building out a full seasonal range without switching fabric or fit halfway through.
When the brief calls for something sharper
Not every uniform needs to be built purely for durability. Client-facing teams, management, and front-of-house staff often need something with a bit more polish.
The Tee Jays TJ127 is a genuinely premium option: 100% ringspun combed Pima cotton at 200gsm, enzyme-washed for a softer finish, with a tailored fit and a self-fabric collar that holds its shape without ironing. The TJ034 is the women’s equivalent. For a slightly more classic smart-casual option, the Asquith & Fox AQ010 offers ringspun combed cotton piqué in both a slim and relaxed fit – a good middle ground between the two.
At the top end, the Nimbus Harvard (NB52M / NB52F) – 95% combed organic cotton, 5% elastane, 230gsm – gives you structure and a proper finish with enough stretch to stay comfortable through a full shift. It’s the one we suggest when a client wants their management team visibly a tier above the rest of the uniform.
Why it's worth thinking in ranges, not single garments
Almost nobody needs just one polo. A team needs a durable everyday option, a long-sleeve version for winter, and something smarter for anyone meeting clients – and a year from now, they’ll need more of all three as staff join and stock wears out.
That’s exactly the conversation we have with clients from the start: build the range once – everyday, comfort, premium – and reordering becomes simple instead of starting from scratch every time.
